Mt. Jiri Goroshe Wine and Beer

A Conceptual Bar Blending Tradition and Nature

This conceptual bar, designed by Shinyoung Park, is a unique and harmonious blend of tradition and nature. Situated in the valley of Mt. Jiri, the bar aims to promote and sell Korean liquor to day and night visitors, while staying true to eco-friendly and traditional methods.

The design of Mt. Jiri Goroshe Wine and Beer showcases two distinct harmonies. Firstly, it combines modern and traditional elements, with a modern bar filled with traditional Korean lightings. This visualizes the coexistence of the past and present, creating a unique atmosphere for visitors. Secondly, the building's shape and color resemble the mountain itself, allowing it to seamlessly blend into the surrounding nature. The large windows provide panoramic views of the mountain, further enhancing the connection between architecture and the natural environment.

The realization of this design involved the use of a truss structure, exposed mass concrete, and artificial seamless cliff tile walls. The building has a floor area of 69m2 (743ft2) and stands at a height of 5m. Its length of 16.15m and width of 6.775m make it a spacious and inviting space for visitors.

The interaction within the bar is carefully designed to cater to the needs of visitors. The entrance, bar, and encountering area are dedicated to greeting visitors and introducing the products. This area is partially enclosed, allowing visitors to focus on the products. As visitors move further into the bar, they encounter steps that lead to a wider view of the mountain. Sightseeing and tasting are the main purposes of this space. Visitors can easily walk out through a side door and enjoy the surrounding area.

The bar features three doors. The main entrance, located in the center, is open to everyone. The second door provides access for workers to the buried jars where the liquor ages. The third door faces the mountain, offering the best view of the building. All doors are designed to be opened in good weather, allowing for natural air circulation. The bar is conveniently located next to a tea tasting center and a small hotel, ensuring a steady stream of visitors throughout the year. The shared bathroom building is located outside, near the bar.

The design and construction of Mt. Jiri Goroshe Wine and Beer took place between December 2016 and February 2017. Throughout the project, the designer faced several challenges. The irregular form of the building required creative solutions, such as the use of mirrors on the walls and ceiling to create a more spacious look. The incorporation of large windows presented difficulties in balancing natural light during the day and creating a cozy atmosphere at night. Balancing the old and the new was another challenge, which was overcome by strategically placing traditional objects, furniture, jars, and small lightings alongside modern elements.

This conceptual bar is a testament to the designer's ability to create a unique and harmonious space that showcases the beauty of tradition and nature. By blending modern and traditional elements and seamlessly integrating the building with its natural surroundings, Mt. Jiri Goroshe Wine and Beer offers visitors an unforgettable experience.
